IMMEDIATE RELEASE
June 18, 2024
Contact: Jorge Fernandez
Jorge Fernandez has filed to run for the Fort Wayne Community Schools District 5 seat currently held by Steve Corona.
Jorge Fernandez intends to as a school board urge Fort Wayne Redevelopment Commission to create pass-throughs for Tax Increment Financing districts (for all uncommitted funds) that have been diverting property taxes from the school district that could be used to help supplement the programs the district has, improve environmental impact of school district including looking at applying for Federal grants for electric mini and regular size school-buses, looking at environmentally friendly landscaping designs at schools, and encouraging the district to listen more to teachers and parents and guardians of students. Jorge Fernandez understands the proper role of a school district member is not to micromanage the affairs of the district; his intention would be to encourage district leadership to bring forth proposals relating to the aforementioned points.
In contrast, the incumbent has failed to try to secure commitments to the environment relating to a sale in an area zoned industrial while on Fort Wayne Redevelopment Commission, has seemingly not indicated he would create a maximum pass-through for school districts while on Fort Wayne Redevelopment Commission, and has given no indication of trying to phase out fossil fuel dependence of Fort Wayne Community Schools including its bus fleet. Jorge Fernandez notes there are a lot of good programs going on in Fort Wayne and he wishes to keep the ones that seem to be working like the Peacemakers Program is doing for conflict resolution. He has noted he likes how the Let's Talk App is doing with tracking parent and teacher communication of those participating. He acknowledges that Steve Corona has been a trailblazer for community of Latin American descent in Fort Wayne and appreciates a lot of what he has done for the community including with Latinos Count.
If Jorge Fernandez was to be elected to the Fort Wayne Community Schools District 5 seat in the election this year, he would resign any Fort Wayne Community Schools job he would hold at time sometime before January 1, 2025, per Indiana requirements, and intends to depend on other jobs for non-school board compensation.
